Son of Late Raja Sir Padam Singh of Bushahr State; born on 23rd June 1934 at Sarahan, District Shimla; BA (Hons.), MA; educated at Bishop Cotton School, Shimla and St. Stephen’s College, Delhi; married to Smt. Pratibha Singh; one son and four daughters; Agriculturist and Horticulturist.
Remained President (elected) Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee in 1977, 1979, 1980 & from 26th August, 2012 to December 2012.
Elected to third Lok Sabha in 1962; re-elected to 4th Lok Sabha in 1967 from Mahasu Constituency, 5th Lok Sabha in 1971 , 7th Lok Sabha in 1980 and 15th Lok Sabha (5th term) in May 2009 from Mandi Lok- Sabha Constituency; remained Member, Estimates Committee, Lok Sabha, ii) Railways Convention Committee and Chairman, Petitions Committee, Lok Sabha; Deputy Minister, Tourism and Civil Aviation, 31th December 1976 to 24th March 1977; Minister of State for Industries, 11th September 1982 to 8th April 1983; Union Minister of Steel, 28th May, 2009 to 19th Jan, 2011 and Union Minister of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSME) from 19th January 2011 to 26th June, 2012.
Elected to the State Legislative Assembly in October 1983 (by-election); re-elected in 1985 from Jubbal-Kotkhai Assembly Constituency, in 1990, 1993, 1998, 2003 & 2007 from Rohru Assembly Constituency and in 2012 from Shimla Rural Assembly Constituency.
Remained Chief Minister, Himachal Pradesh, from 8th April, 1983 to 5th March, 1990, 3rd December, 1993 to 23rd March, 1998 and from 6th March, 2003 to 29th December, 2007; Leader of Opposition, March 1998 to March 2003; and Chief Minister of the Himachal Pradesh for the sixth time from 25th December,2012 to 26th December,2017.
Re-elected to the thirteenth Vidhan Sabha (9th term) in December, 2017 from Arki Assembly Constituency.

Travels Abroad: Member: 9th Indian delegation to the General Assembly, United Nations,1976 , ii) various parliamentary and govt. delegations to U. K., U.S.A., France, Germany, USSR (now Russia) Afghanistan, Nepal, Ghana, Yugoslavia, Guinea, Senegal, Lebanon, Kuwait, Syria and Egypt. Also traveled to various other countries of Europe, America, Middle East and Far East.
Social and Cultural Activities: Associated with numbers of social and cultural organizations; remained Chairman, Pradesh Sahitya Samelan; President Sanskrit Sahitya Sammelan and Friends of Soviet Union (now Russia) Society (H.P. State branch); and also remained honorary Captain, Indian Army.
Sports and Clubs: Member, Indian International Centre, New Delhi and Shimla Amateur Dramatic Club Gaiety Shimla.
